Several months ago Lincoln Center sent me a brochure of their summer offerings…one that really appealed to me was the 12 hour production of Dostoevsky’s Demons (in Italian), on Governor’s Island. I’ve not yet read Demons, I don’t know Italian, but there was something about the immersion in a 12 hour production that required meeting a ferry at a certain time that sounded so interesting/challenging/enlightening. Yet when it came time to click on that purchase button the thought of TWELVE HOURS began to take on sinister tones. I caved. I didn’t go. The production came and went without me. To my delight, days ago I happened upon a 4 part article (it was a 12 hour production, of course it would be a 4 part article) by Elif Batuman, writing for the Paris Review Daily, here. It’s a great read and if you too have misgivings about not attending the performance…I think this might make you feel rather satisfied.
