Witch Hazel
Witch Hazel is a deciduous shrub in NYC and one lives on the south side of my building. It blooms in January with bright yellow crinkly petals. It's a welcomed sight in the cold of winter.
From Wikipedia: The name Witch in witch-hazel has its origins in Middle English wiche, meaning "pliant" or "bendable". The use of the twigs as divining rods, just as hazel twigs were used in England, may also have, by folk etymology, influenced the "witch" part of the name.
